09/16/2026 Readings Keira Muselbeck

All of the readings this week featured themes of woman's empowerment and self expression with each showing that in very different and distinct ways. Some of the stories showed more negative approaches to such revelations and others showed postive realizations by the main characters.

In The Lonesome Bodybuilder the main character sees the body of bodybuilders and develops what can be referred to as an idolization for bodybuilders. This prompts her to go on a journey to become one, this is a thought provoking piece to me that stuck out. I found the relationship with her husband a fascinating one the fact that over the course of weeks of training he isn't aware enough of her to realize how much she is changing. The real interesting thing to study was how quickly the other woman in her workplace noticed the changes to her physically but her husband does not. I contributed the fact that it was more noticed in her workplace as a certain cultural standard expected of women and the fact that she no longer fit the standard at all and was seen as strange or rather fascinating. Her husband however and her seem to have grown more distant as time has gone by and by that nature they become more lonesome to each other. What I'm trying to say is that sometimes in life the people we seem closest to only become more distant overtime and we often find a difficulty resolving that issue.

Another of the readings that drew me in this week specifically was the excerpt from Breasts and Eggs which was told from the point of view of a woman who has severe sexual trauma but upon seeing photos of her ex lovers baby realizes that despite her general repulsion towards sexual activity she really desires to have a child of her own. This shows her going through the realization which in itself is a fascinating process. She then goes through learning whether she has easy access to such care despite being a single women all alone.
