Twelve Twitter Stories
I really enjoyed the amalgamation of small stories. At first I was confused on how to read them, but I realized that the 12 short paragraphs corresponded to the "Twelve Twitter Stories" mentioned in the title. I liked the message of the last one, which I figured out essentially boiled down to the key message: Life is unsatisfying when you don’t work for it.
I Want to Kick You in the Back
I really enjoyed reading this excerpt. The MC's cynical, wallflower, and self-resigned outlook on life is how I saw the world around me when I was younger, and it was interesting to read her inner thoughts about the people around her. I thought she was quite rude in her mind, however her actions spoke differently.
People Who Talk to Animals Are Nice
I really enjoyed how this excerpt treats love as something Nanamori can't quite feel rather than something he's chasing. He asks Shiraki out mostly because everyone around him seems to be in love, even though he admits his "like" is only a friend kind of like, and he feels guilty for liking Mugito more.
The Hole
I thought it was really intresting how the book showed gender expectations through small, ordinary moments instead of big statements. Asa's coworker assumes she'll be pregnant and "living the dream" as a housewife, and Asa lets her think that, which shows how automatically people read her life as following a gendered narrative. What also struck me was when Sera called her "the bride," and Asa realizes that's who she's become to everyone, with no one calling her by her own name anymore.
